General information about Modafin in USA
Improve wakefulness in patients with excessive sleepiness associated with narcolepsy or other sleep disorders. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Modafinil is a wakefulness promoting agent. Exactly how it works is not known, but it is thought to work by altering natural chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the brain.
Do NOT use modafinil if:
- You are allergic to any ingredient in modafinil or to armodafinil
- You have a history of developing a rash after taking modafinil or armodafinil
- You have a history of certain heart or heart valve problems (eg mitral valve prolapse, left ventricular enlargement)
Contact your doctor or health care provider immediately if any of these apply to you.

Before using modafinil:
Certain medical conditions may interact with modafinil. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following applies to you:
- If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding
- If you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medication, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
- If you have allergies to medicines, foods or other substances
- If you suffer from liver problems, kidney problems, heart problems (eg.chest pain, heart blood vessel problems, recent heart attack) or high blood pressure
- If you have a history of mental or mood disorders (eg, depression, mania, psychosis), suicidal thoughts or actions, or substance abuse or dependence
- If you are taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (eg, phenelzine)
Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with modafinil. Tell your healthcare provider if you are taking any other medications, including:
- Erythromycin or ketoconazole as they may increase the risk of modafinil side effects
- Carbamazepine, phenobarbital, or rifampin as they may decrease the effectiveness of modafinil
- Clomipramine, desipramine, diazepam, hydantoins (eg phenytoin), omeprazole, propranolol or warfarin, as the risk of side effects may be increased by modafinil
- Cyclosporine, hormonal products (eg, birth control pills, some hormone replacements), midazolam, quetiapine, or triazolam because their effectiveness may be decreased by modafinil
This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if modafinil may interact with other medications you take. Check with your healthcare provider before starting, stopping, or changing the dose of any medicine.
