Description
General information about Vemox 500 in USA
Vemox 500 (Amoxicillin) is a moderate spectrum antibiotic for cats and dogs belonging to the penicillin class. This drug inhibits the growth of bacteria by preventing the cell wall of bacterial cells from forming. Amoxicillin should only be used to treat bacterial infections and not for viral and parasitic infections.
Amoxicillin comes in the trihydrate form, which is the active ingredient in these capsules. Amoxicillin spreads easily to all tissues and fluids of the body except the brain and spinal fluid, thus providing wide coverage.
Precaution
This antibiotic for dogs and cats should only be used in cases that turn out to be bacterial infections. It should not be used in animals hypersensitive to penicillin and in animals raised for meat because amoxicillin is bound to proteins in nature. Amoxicillin tablets are contraindicated with certain drugs such as Allopurinol and Erythromycin. The capsules dissolve slowly, which may take some time for the animal to show tangible signs of improvement.
Dosage
Vemox 500 (Amoxicillin) is available in 250mg and 500mg capsules. The recommended dose of amoxicillin in dogs and cats is 5-10mg/pound every 12-24 hours. Amoxicillin can be given with or without food, as it is stable under gastric conditions.
Side effects in USA
Amoxicillin capsules could trigger allergic reactions to insulin in some animals, which may have symptoms such as rash, fever, swelling of the face or limbs, labored breathing, rapid heartbeat and a disorder. Excessive dose can lead to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain, while abnormally high doses can lead to acute oliguric renal failure or hematuria. Other side effects when using amoxicillin include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, which require urgent medical help.
